OUGD203 / Evaluation

OUGD203 - Mitch Weaver

1.What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout this module the main practice I have developed is my image skills, within design and Illustration. As the image module allowed me to directly involve experimental and effective processes of using image as the main focus of my design practice. I have then been able to transfer and further my development with this as the centre point. Before this module, I was lacking confidence with using colour with my design work, especially Illustration, as most of my work before was entirely black and white. Experimental practice within colour using Adobe software, using one colour as the main basis and applying tints to create depth has pushed me to concentrate my Illustrative practice as the sole point of my design work. Generally across the CS5 suite, I have gained more knowledge and understanding, which has made me more effective to producing work defining my outcomes.

 2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Creating visuals that can be applied across a number of formats contextually, has been my most developed process. This has allowed me to understand how a range can define and ultimately improve the outcomes of my design work. Working to a strict limited colour pallet has increased my visual response to a brief, allowing my Illustrative visuals become stronger with a much deeper impact. Incorporating photography, digital manipulation and research has shown more experimental practices throughout my work, some I find have shown my prominent aspects in design. Focussing directly with image.

 3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

Illustration has been the biggest strength throughout my practical work, as I have been able to continually push the direction and practice throughout the recent project. This has allowed me to be more confident and experimental, using digital art as the most effective way of applying the artwork across a number of formats. From this I now have a number of visuals that could be used for other projects or even portfolio pieces. This will be main practice and focus point throughout future briefs, as I believe I can constantly and effectively improve my practice.

 4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

Type and layout, more so combining them together with visuals as I feel my understanding is lacking. This is going to be developed constantly alongside my Illustration, in order to produce pieces of design work that compliment each other. Creating an effective product range is another aspect that needs improving in order to effectively explore the potentials of each piece of design work.

 5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

 - Experiment with hand rendered type and letterforms.
_ A more effective approach to using Illustration within Graphic Design

 - Using a wider range of print processes.
_ This will allow myself to consider how they can define my design work.

 - Explore digital media such as animation.
_ This would aid my Illustrative practice as I could focus on making the visuals become in motion.

 - Increase my visual output.
– By doing this, I would have more pieces of work to design with at an early stage of the design process.

 - Consistently ask myself Why I am doing this ?
 – The main question of practice, asking why would allow myself to continue to make decisions that allow my design practice become more relevant to the brief.
