OUGD301 - Evaluation

-

Mitch Weaver
Evaluation – OUGD301

1.What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout this module my main skill set that I have developed, is thinking visually. Working heavily on illustration and image-based design has allowed myself to start putting together a thorough strategy for the future. Working within different techniques, and challenging my existing ability has shown me that there is always a lot more to learn. Overall my weakness in this has to be the production side to creating pieces of design that exists physically. Generating work on screen can be easily achieved, but in reality it still needs to be three-dimensional. I feel that however, my type skills have massively improved, alongside my editorial design work. This is something I aim to continue to practice further, as eventually it shows my illustrative work in a more defined body of work.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Starting out with the hand drawn approach is something I always try to improve, although at times can be time consuming. There is a raw overall feel to each design/illustration that has allowed myself as a designer to start thinking about this within my practice. Overall production is something that I feel I am massively lacking in, as it seems to show towards the end of every brief. This is down to a few reasons, my financial situation, and personal life. Something, which I constantly try to improve. With that it has allowed me to understand how low-fi DIY can be successful and not expensive at the same time. This is what I want to capitalise on throughout the remainder of the year. Hopefully developing into a successful practice, keeping everything relevant to myself and design direction.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The main strengths throughout my work are image based designs & illustrations. This is what I feel I am the most effective at utilising within each brief. As my rational states that I want to push this more throughout all of my design work, ultimately creating an almost double skill set. Using design with illustration and not apart.

 4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

The most obvious weakness is my production process. Automatically I feel that each brief di not reach it’s fullest potential due to the lack of organization, and as already stated financial situation. At times I felt stuck, especially as I did not collaborate with any of my peers, making my work load a lot more difficult to handle at times. Not looking for excuses here, just how I see my weaknesses.

 5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

-       Production: Using this  throughout my briefs, to test my design work in the physical world and not leaving it all to the last minute.

-       Editorial: This is something I feel slightly more confident with in terms of designing work that can be seen through a book., magazine or publication.

-       Digital Illustration: Realistically this is the most efficient method to creating designs to be applied across a number of different platforms. Utilising this to it’s full advantage will allow myself to be more efficient and consistent on briefs.

-       Illustrative Type: This is was something I aimed to practice on, to aid my image based illustrations but I did not. This  seems to be the most effective method of incorporating type with image, within illustration.

-       Questions: Actually ask for advice, direction and help. I did not use the support effectively around the studio. Instead I worried about everything on my own. This is something I definitely need to take advantage of in order to successfully become a better designer within the course structure.

OUGD301 - Submission Boards

-
Final submission boards for all four briefs I have been working on this module. I have tried to keep them visually the same in terms of the bottom text and information, but change the layout to suit the purpose of the brief. These in themselves showcase my design work on almost professional scale, still need for some massive improvements and development in this area, but overall I feel they capture the project effectively. Not stressing too much on unnecessary pieces of design work.

Final Crit Boards

-
Final crit boards. Not going to lie, there was no real direction with these at all, and errors can be seen all over the place. The type needs to be at a smaller point size and also the boards need to reflect my briefs, not just sit there without any visual relation. Saying that and realising my own errors will help me understand that I do need to put time aside to actually present and print my work.

Range - Three Potential T-shirts / PR

-
After discussing my current progress with Amber this afternoon, it was made clear to me to finish off this brief and begin working on my other ones. As the outcome was to submit a t-shirt design for Prosthetic Records, it didn't seem appropriate to expand the design work further. Producing three more potential proposed designs would allow the project to have some credibility, but not too much work.

From doing this project I have realised that focussing specifically to one outcome is too limiting and does not challenge my ability to an extent. I need to be able to make choices as to how the final products should be focussed towards and not using a t-shirt as the sole intention of a brief.

Logos / Type - PR

-
Although the brief did want t-shirt designs produced, I felt that it was necessary to create potential logo ideas that would aid the illustrations. Experimenting with type is something I want to utilise more in my practice, not in the extent of using, of creating typefaces. Instead creating illustrative pieces of type work for display headings and letterforms for logos.

Below are a serious of ideas I have been playing around with, colour ways and more graphic design based outcomes. I now know how easy it should be to create a logo, and it has massively helped myself in creating informed decisions towards my design work.

Finished Tattoo Arm Illustration - PR

-
Finished Vector

Final piece of artwork. Overall I am pretty happy with how this has turned out. Although I did spend a lot more time than anticipated creating it, I feel that it is one of my strongest pieces of work to date. The colours seem to work well together, especially with the context of prosthetic limbs. As the Aqua / Green could relate to hospitals, infection and illnesses. The next stage was to start placing the artwork onto products, firstly a t-shirt mock.

-

To play around with placement, I flipped the image around and created a symmetrical crossover, creating an image that takes up twice the amount of space. This could be useful when applying the design to clothing as it might not fit effectively on it's own and could become lost in the space.

-
Colour Variations -

Quick colour variations using photoshop to see the possible colour options I could have taken. Although some of them are quite nice to look at, I don't feel they are as strong as the initial choice taken.

Cybernetic Tattoo Arm - PR / Sketch

-
SKETCH

Initial sketch, line work taken from my sketchbook. Whilst drawing this I realised that the bicep part of the arm was not right and needed to bend out more, in order to look more fluid with movement. I didn't want to spend too much time putting in the detail for this piece a I felt it would take up unnecessary time. From this I took a photograph and put it into Illustrator.

-
DIGITAL OUTLINE

The starting point to this was the vector up the outline using a graphics tablet and play around with the positioning of the arm. By doing this I was able to create a piece of work that had potential to be placed across a wide range of products with ease. As you can see it still doesn't look finished, more details need to be added.

-
COLOUR

The next step was colour, although I did not put much theory behind why I chose to use the colour. I managed to stick to using just two colours throughout, focussing on tints to create different tones and depth. From producing artwork in OUGD203, I already realised that using this process was the most efficient and effective approach whilst keeping colour limits in mind.

Mannequin Production Line - PR Artwork

-

After speaking with Phil, he made it clear that I could be looking at infographics and apply it through my own style of illustration. With that in mind, I decided to create an illustration focussing on a production line of prosthetic humanoids. Feeding in with my context for the brief, I feel that this direction although still in need of refinement is the right path to choose. By sunday, monday at the latest  I will have a resolved piece of artwork ready for submission.

-

Mutation - PR Artwork

-

Drew out this creature the other night in my diary/organiser and realised it could become a potential t-shirt design, even if not used for prosthetic records. Although looking directly at the image, you would not relate it to the record label, but it would be relevant to the audience in some ways. Particularly as this style of grotesque, and dark visuals is heavily incorporate into the metal scene.

I've included part of my process to show how I have taken an image from paper and applied colour to create a completely new digital rendering. I find that work this way is the most effective as you have a number of steps that you can refer back to, if needed.

Factory - Digital Sketches / Artwork

-

Taken again from one of my initial preliminary sketches, I have developed this simple tattoo inspired illustration. Based around a prosthetics factory, or so it seems in my head anyway. At this point I feel relatively happy with how my illustration is progressing through the start of the module and I want carry on experimenting with different techniques, that would eventually allow me to define my practice.

-

From the outline drawing, I took the file into photoshop and began adding colour. This time a bit more structured than the last, trying to create an almost realistic but yet illustrated piece of work. Experimenting with the tools within photoshop is allowing me to actually use colour a lot more effectively than I anticipated, as I now know how to create digital paintings / artwork to some extent.

Archway / Limb - Preliminary Digital Sketches

-
Archway -

Taken from my original sketch, I have digitally rendered this in photoshop as roughly as I can, applying layers of colour and texture. This is a start of a potential final piece of artwork. I have tried to loosely use vibrant colours, to exaggerate the centre point and surrounding environment, in order to effectively show development of an idea.

-

Arm -

Again more experimentation within photoshop, but instead I have tried to create an almost marker pen effect. Than has been built up of overlaying colours. The line work is pretty sketchy but this is an initial idea after all. I feel that this could be one of my strongest visuals to work with and I am going to produce a few more ideas. Each with more defined features than before.

-

Preliminary PR Sketches

-

These are a few images that I have recently worked on as potential ideas for the design outcome. As the deadline is due next week, I have began to put together some ideas with more attention to line work and structure. The main focus is on the use of a prosthetic limb, as in my eyes it seems almost so obvious but forgotten at the same time. I plan to demonstrate a number of illustrative ideas over the next few days and begin to focus on developing a final piece of artwork, for next week.

Prosthetic Records - Ideas / Sketches

As the actual deadline to this brief is coming up shortly, I need to get straight into designing and developing outcomes. Creating a number of potential pieces of artwork, type and sketches will be the forefront of this brief until the deadline. Although saying that if I work efficiently enough I will be able to possibly create a range of products alongside the original deliverable.

To get some ideas flowing and sketch out potential ideas for the brief, I have wrote down a few things straight from my head, with some thought. Mainly as a starting point as to where I can begin to investigate potential approaches of design.

HAND DRAWN TYPE -

DESIGN SHEETS -

These above are pretty rough, quick ideas of design direction. What I needed to do was dive straight into the visual side to the brief and put down some sketches. This has allowed me to understand the potential design outcomes, products and range of steps I need to take.
