Book: 20 Transfer Tattoo's

Although it's taken me some time to finally find a decent approach to the brief, I know exactly where I'm going to take this now. I aim to create a series of 5 booklets, with 20 pull out tattoo designs that could possibly be transferred to the body. This aims to give people the chance to try before you buy and also entice tattoo enthusiasts into the product.

This is the front cover design for one of my books. The content I aim to include will follow with a brief outline of the tattoo, it's meaning, the history. Best place on the body to have it done, colour, tips on getting it done.

Collection 100: Tattoos

20 Facts:-

- Tattooing has been used as a way of smuggling secret messages across enemy
lines in times of war
- The world's most tattooed person is Tom Leppard from the Isle of Skye, Scotland,
who has 99.9 per cent of his body covered with a leopard-skin design.
- The Maori people in New Zealand tattooed their heads (moko) and buttocks by
chiselling a design into the skin and rubbing ink into it. If one of their chiefs died, they
would remove and preserve the tattooed head, keeping it as a treasured possession.
- European missionaries in the Cook Islands tried to remove tattoos by scrubbing them
off with sandstone. Since the ink lay deep in the skin's dermis, this involved scouring
the body raw.
- In October 1991, the 5000 year-old frozen body of a Bronze Age hunter was found
between Austria and Italy. His body bore several tattoos.
- King Harold II of England had a number of tattoos. After his death at the Battle of
Hastings in 1066, his tattoos were used to identify his body.
- A pig tattooed on one foot and a rooster on the other were said to protect a seaman
from drowning. Neither animal can swim and it was thought they would help get the
sailor swiftly to shore if he fell into the water.
- Other popular tattoos amongst sailors are also attributed with particular meanings:
• a full-rigged ship shows the seaman has sailed round Cape Horn
• an anchor indicates he has sailed the Atlantic Ocean
• a dragon denotes that the bearer has served on a China station
• a shellback turtle shows the sailor has crossed the equator
• 'Hold' tattooed on the knuckles of one hand and 'fast' on the other were said
to allow the bearer to grip the rigging better.
- American George C. Reiger Jr boasts over 1000 tattoos based on Disney characters,
including all 101 dalmatians.
- The word 'tattoo' is derived from the Tahitian word 'tatau', meaning to mark.
- Urine was sometimes used to mix the colouring matter of early tattoos.
- The tattooing machine is based on the design of the doorbell.
- Winston Churchill's mother, Lady Randolph Churchill, had a snake tattooed on her
wrist.
- Tahitians believed that the process of tattooing the body served to contain its sacred
power.
- Early Christians often had the sign of the cross tattooed on their bodies, particularly
their face or arms.
- The first tattooed man to be shown publicly in England was a Pacific islander known
as Prince Joely.
- The most painful areas are those where the skin is very close to the bone, such as
the ankles, elbows and knees. It is less painful to be tattooed on more fleshy areas
such as the chest or upper arms. Pain was an important part of tattooing for
Polynesian societies.
- Samoan tattoo artists used combs to apply their designs.
- Until 2006 it was illegal to get a tattoo in Oklahoma,USA.
- The record for the longest tattoo session is 43 hours and 50 minutes and was completed by the very observant and talented artist Melanie Grieveson, of Australia. The tattooed was Stephen Grady.

- 15% of 18-25 year olds think that the increase in people being tattooed has caused a positive impact.
- 60% of 18-25 year olds think that the increase in people being tattooed has caused no discernible impact.
- 36% of 18-25 year olds have at least one tattoo.
- More than 45 million Americans have at least one tattoo.
- 61% of people unable to find a design they want in a tattoo studio would go to TattooFinder.com to Find the Perfect Tattoo Design instead of picking a second choice design, going to another tattoo studio, or not getting tattooed.
- 41% of those considering getting a tattoo would pay up to 50% more for a tattoo artist known to have a good reputation and who is certified by their local health department.
- 61% of people say that the reputation of a tattoo artist and tattoo studio is most important factor when selecting who will tattoo them and where they will get tattooed.
- 43% of people polled say they get tattooed to represent something personal.
- 29% of adults with tattoos feel more rebellious.
- 17% of those with tattoos regret getting them.
- The number of women with tattoos quadrupled from 1960 to 1980.
- 38% of people say they choose a tattoo because it has special meaning to the.
- Tattooing is the United State's 6th fastest growing retail business.
- 6% of Americans now have one or more tattoos.

Collection 100: Design Sheets

These design sheets and rough sketches are examples of how I am going to approach making some form of infographics and book to produce for my final collection 100 piece.






To gather a rough idea on how I was going to collect and categorise the research on my chosen 100 I created a table with different columns, representing a different method of categorising. Alphabetical, location, time, category and continuum.

Collection 100: Student Feedback

Typogateaux

For the typogateaux competition me and Will decided to run with an Aztec theme, which later failed and did not fulfil our design. Although we didn't win, we still had a chance to incorporate design into something that usually would not be considered.

Graphs and Charts

I've decided to create graphs to represent the data I have collected. To be honest I haven't really pulled my weight enough throughout this project, as a result of this I'm not happy with my work. This project has definitely been a learning curve. Anyway, I have kept the graphs as a simple as I can to eliminate any problems of understand the information. The colours I chose I felt contrasted well with each other and did not cause any confusion throughout the design.

Tattoo Chart

Just been messing around with the data I've collected on peoples tattoos and the questions I asked him. Thought I'd make a quick graph to get some ideas flowing, not really sure what direction I'm going to take this at the moment. I need to gather more data for sure.

Tattoo Data

To keep my project simple and create a general basis in which to start with, I'm going to collect information off 100 people with tattoos. By doing this I am able to gather data and generate ideas from this.

The question I will ask go as followed;

- Name.
- Date you had it done.
- Type/Image or Both .
- Time it took.
- Place you had it done.

I will use various methods of collecting this info, using social networking, asking people face to face and using internet forums. Here are some of the answers I have gathered so far.

To start building up a general knowledge of tattoos throughout time I have began to look at the different processes and history of tattoos and how their meanings have been depicted, in an era.

Playing Cards

The ideas of having traditional tattoos displayed on playing cards really appeals to me, although it has already been done. I would like to investigate this idea further and use my own style of illustrations within the work.

Collection 100: Research

I asked people on facebook their attitudes and opinions on tattoo's. This is the feedback they gave me.

'' Can anyone give me their opinion on tattoos ? Any reasoning behing getting one, do you appreciate them. etc. ''

Kirsty Alderson - I like tattoos but generally only if they have some kind of meaning or you desing them yourself. I got mine because I designed it myself. I also like looking at other peoples tattoos and find it a great topic to discuss with certain people.

Crash Bandicoot - They feel nice and look shweeeet.

Fiona Jane Linaker - They make skin more interesting, makes you different (only if your tattoo is not a shit generic ones like stars or names for example.) Its a form of expression further than clothes for me. Some have meanings some are for asethetic reasons. I don't feel every tattoo has to have a hidden meaning. They hurt, they are expensive, its annoying when people ask if they are real. I will be covered one day. I don't think they are addictive but once you get a few you might as well aim to look finished. I hate tribal tattoos.

Aimée Katherine Goodall - They allow people to express themselves, and portray their views and beliefs. A picture says a thousand words. I just worry that my pictures may say words I don't feel as I get older. I mean, I'm completely different now than when I was any other age and I guess that will continue throughout my life. I hope I never outgrow my tattoo's. But at the same time, I feel I only think this way because of how I have grown up. My mum has no tattoo's and so maybe it's just because I compare myself to her because I have no other older woman I could compare myself with really? On the other hand, my dad has sleeves. And I couldn't imagine him without them and think that they match his personality. I guess it just means I don't want to be "normal". But I already knew that. I don't want a standard 9-5 job or a standard "stay in one city your whole life" lifestyle. I want to have a career that represents me and my opinions, beliefs, enjoyments and ambitions and if I achieve that then whatever is on my skin will match :) These are just some things I think about sometimes... Hope it helps though it's a bit of an essay. Oh and... Tats are sexy.










For my collection 100 I have decided to focus on tattoos. These images are of my girlfriend. As you can see each of her tattoos is highly detailed and of a professional standard.

This is an image of my tattoo that I drew out, originally as just a sketch. My having something that I can relate to by it being my own artwork, helps me recognise the whole point of tattoos.

What If... T-Shirt Designs

For the group project we decided to split down into smaller teams to work on specific aspects to our problem. I have been designing a few t-shirt designs that could be incorporated into our project in some way.

Leeds Messtival

For our group work we have been looking at narrowing down our recycling starting point to something more focusses. From looking at big events that happen in leeds, the amount of waste produced at Leeds Festival every year became an apparent issue. He are some of the ideas we came up with to tackle this problem.

Collection 100.

For the collection 100 research I have been looking at industrial metal and objects that have some form or erosion on age. From this I think I can easily build a base to work from using my images as research, then move on to a number of different aspects within my images.

Recycling T-Shirts

As an incentive for people to to recycle throughout the festival, we came up with an idea of giving away 'free stuff' that would benefit the festival people. T-shirts could be a good way to promote and also deal with the problem as everyone loves reppin' their favourite bands. By incorporating the green way of living into artists merchandise people could realise the problem.

Leeds Festival

Leeds Festival is held every year, which means there is always a massive increase in the amount of waste produced throughout. Although there is advice and information on how to tackle this, there isn't an awful lot being done to effectively reduce the waste.





This is a photograph of the camp site at leeds festival. You can clearly see the amount of people that attend the event. Litter can become a massive problem if not handled in an effective way.

RECYCLE

YOUR CANS COUNT

It is estimated around 8 tonne of aluminium cans are at the festival after the party’s over. Much of this is left on the ground in the campgrounds. We want to let you know that YOUR CANS COUNT.

Bring back a bagful of cans to the Recycle Exchanges in the campgrounds, and we’ll give you a free can of beer. It’s that simple.

We’ll even give you the bag to collect the cans in. They’ll be handed out at wristband exchange when you enter the site, by our Green Messengers wandering the campgrounds, from your campsite manager’s caravan, and also from the Recycle Exchanges.
