DESIGN PRODUCTION - DIGITAL

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
Mitch Weaver

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Obviously, it would be After Effects. I now feel I can confidently use this piece of software to create moving pieces of design work that reflect some of the ideas I have created. Alongside that, using time to create flowing sequences of key frames, has allowed be to develop an understanding of process. This could then be applied to a number of elements across a broad range of media within design criteria. Effectively, being organised from and idea to an outcome, creates a more effective and direct contact with audience.

Realistically, I would want to spend more time developing these skills further and using different aspects throughout a number of different briefs, this would allow a more effective process from an idea to an outcome.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Putting an idea onto storyboards has allowed me to understand a visualisation of how a final piece could ultimately become. Essentially, using a sequence in a specific order within a time frame has pushed me to want to generate more ideas. Taking what I have created and then applying it directly to after effects made the idea itself become more effective. As I now have a broad understanding between paper and software.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The main strength I feel can be clearly seen throughout my design work is the context and audience. The fact the Munnyworld vinyl toys are not really commercialised in such a way, like numerous other products. Allows a direct understanding and limitation as to who would actually see the motion graphics. It’s aimed directly at a specific product.

Alongside this, my end motion seemed effective in reaching the audience. I have tried to keep things as simple as possible but have added effects that allow a much more developed piece of moving image.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

- Synchronisation with the music and motions of artwork and imagery. This is something that I found particularly difficult to work with. As realistically I needed to understand the track before hand and also exactly at what point the keyframe would move with the beat.

- As the audience is specific and direct to a number of people, other viewers may not understand the product or programme at all. Saying that, this is what I wanted achieve as I did not want to create something that would be directly reaching the masses.

- The motion graphic itself is relatively flat within the composition. I should have experimented more with the three dimensional space in order to create a different flow of movement.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

- I wanted to incorporate Papercraft into the animation, but I felt with time constraints and lack of organisation that this was not viable for a solution. Realistically, I should have been more engaged with my idea in order to develop it, but learning new software along the way did not help my ideas to become working pieces of design. Not to say that it was a waste of time in any way.

- Storyboarding. There’s always a better idea, or something that might work more effectively as you continue to develop ideas on paper. Next time I need to do as many as possible in order to allow myself to have a much more in depth set of ideas.

-  Cameras within After Effects. This was something I briefly looked at, but did not focus it directly within my design work. Ultimately I could have created a more effective mood throughout the motion. As it allows you to work within the three dimensional space, at multiple angles.

- Keep up to date. This something I still have not worked out how to do effectively, as I want to be able to have a lot of development work, which I can look back on, or re-work. This would realistically allow me to become a much more efficient designer.

- Tutorials. This is something I did not really look into, as I felt I wanted to learn how to use the programme from the workshops and myself. Alternatively, I should be looking at how to achieve an idea through a tutorial, this could possibly allow myself to develop an idea even further.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
