 Module Title
DESIGN PRODUCTION - DIGITAL

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
Mitch Weaver

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Obviously, it would be After Effects. I now feel I can confidently use this piece of software to create moving pieces of design work that reflect some of the ideas I have created. Alongside that, using time to create flowing sequences of key frames, has allowed be to develop an understanding of process. This could then be applied to a number of elements across a broad range of media within design criteria. Effectively, being organised from and idea to an outcome, creates a more effective and direct contact with audience.

Realistically, I would want to spend more time developing these skills further and using different aspects throughout a number of different briefs, this would allow a more effective process from an idea to an outcome.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Putting an idea onto storyboards has allowed me to understand a visualisation of how a final piece could ultimately become. Essentially, using a sequence in a specific order within a time frame has pushed me to want to generate more ideas. Taking what I have created and then applying it directly to after effects made the idea itself become more effective. As I now have a broad understanding between paper and software.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The main strength I feel can be clearly seen throughout my design work is the context and audience. The fact the Munnyworld vinyl toys are not really commercialised in such a way, like numerous other products. Allows a direct understanding and limitation as to who would actually see the motion graphics. It’s aimed directly at a specific product.

Alongside this, my end motion seemed effective in reaching the audience. I have tried to keep things as simple as possible but have added effects that allow a much more developed piece of moving image.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

- Synchronisation with the music and motions of artwork and imagery. This is something that I found particularly difficult to work with. As realistically I needed to understand the track before hand and also exactly at what point the keyframe would move with the beat.

- As the audience is specific and direct to a number of people, other viewers may not understand the product or programme at all. Saying that, this is what I wanted achieve as I did not want to create something that would be directly reaching the masses.

- The motion graphic itself is relatively flat within the composition. I should have experimented more with the three dimensional space in order to create a different flow of movement.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

- I wanted to incorporate Papercraft into the animation, but I felt with time constraints and lack of organisation that this was not viable for a solution. Realistically, I should have been more engaged with my idea in order to develop it, but learning new software along the way did not help my ideas to become working pieces of design. Not to say that it was a waste of time in any way.

- Storyboarding. There’s always a better idea, or something that might work more effectively as you continue to develop ideas on paper. Next time I need to do as many as possible in order to allow myself to have a much more in depth set of ideas.

-  Cameras within After Effects. This was something I briefly looked at, but did not focus it directly within my design work. Ultimately I could have created a more effective mood throughout the motion. As it allows you to work within the three dimensional space, at multiple angles.

- Keep up to date. This something I still have not worked out how to do effectively, as I want to be able to have a lot of development work, which I can look back on, or re-work. This would realistically allow me to become a much more efficient designer.

- Tutorials. This is something I did not really look into, as I felt I wanted to learn how to use the programme from the workshops and myself. Alternatively, I should be looking at how to achieve an idea through a tutorial, this could possibly allow myself to develop an idea even further.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Final CD Packaging

-

Basic. The whole Idea behind this was to make the packaging as simple as possible, I felt there wasn't any real need to use and digital design work to support the content. As it relates to the whole customisation and 'do it yourself' part of the munnyworld product.

All of the line work and and type has been hand rendered, not because of laziness or lack of printing processes. I have purposely done this in order to reflect the tone of voice set my the motion graphics.

On the reverse side there is a blank outline sticker of 'Rooz' a customisable vinyl toy from the Kidrobot series. This serves a purpose for customisation, as I want the audience to draw over the template, creating a multi-purpose use for the packaging.

Net Design

After briefly flicking through existing packaging, it occurred to me that If I want to create something, that directly reflects chosen subject matter in context. Then realistically I should produce something more fitting.

This is a design based around a simple template. What I have done is created a sub-fold on the front of the packaging. By doing this, I can allow a multifunctional piece of design to develop.

BASE DESIGN -

Possible colour outcomes > Experimentation > Ideas

-

MOCK UPS -

After printing out a rough paper template of the net, I realised there were some major flaws in the design. For instance, the front compartment was not compatible with the rest of the design, making the idea impossible to do.

For this reason I have decided to simplify the overall idea, in order to save time and create a piece of packaging that effectively works together with the CD.

Top Ten - CONSIDERATIONS / Development

- I've basically put together a document, that briefly goes over the development and processes of my project. The main idea here was to incorporate different aspects of research and practical work in order to understand and visualise the direction I have decided to go with.

CD Packaging - DEVELOPMENT

-

Taking a look at the content within a Munnyworld vinyl toy, one of the items that came with it, was a 'Hello my Name is' card, essentially it's purpose was to give the customised toy a name once created. As this sticker is worldwide known for it's general purpose within retail stores, it also proved iconic inside Graffiti & Street art as part of an essential tool kit.

VECTORS -

Without realising, I have basically created a set of keyframes to work with. Double purpose really, what I am going to quickly do now is play around with potential pieces of type/tags that could be relevant to the context in which it lies in.

SKETCHES -

Obviously the best way to start is to create a visualisation of ideas. Here are a few examples of type placement, weight, colour, stroke and point size. To keep in rhythm with the context of my top ten, I have tried to make the letterforms as playful as possible, also incorporating a key hand drawn style to sketches.

Pre-Final / TOP Ten & Silent Movie / FEEDBACK

Today at first seemed pointless, but then I began to realise the added extra pressure allowed me to complete the graphic motions to a suitable standard for an audience to view. The reason behind this was to allow a test run of the disc with the burnt files, to see if they actually run. Alongside this, having a different audience other than yourself was useful in terms of allowing a reaction, giving you feedback in return

( INTERNET WAS DOWN - COULD NOT CHECK BLOG )

CONSIDERATIONS -

Just a few quick notes that I need to address so the audience fully understands the context behind the brief and also so the content flows more effectively within the motion itself.

The main point which I was able to get back from todays session, was that I had effectively gave myself enough time to go over anything that I have missed, or tweak any of the motions if needed. Time is valuable.

-

------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOP TEN -

*Four Idents
*One Title Sequence

Not quite there yet, in terms of being completely happy with the outcome. There are a few issues that I need to address to make the motion run as smoothly as possible. Some of the transitions do not rotate effectively enough, creating a slight lag or loss of frame time. The track needs to synchronise much more coherently with the timing of the motion, to create a solid atmosphere from the audience.

NEARLY DONE THOUGH!

SILENT MOVIE -

What I find particularly useful about reviewing my earlier attempts of after effects, is seeing a clear understanding and more advanced skill set from then. Although the majority of the transformations are basic, I tried to see how far I could ultimately push them into an idea. This way it would allow me to have a starting point where I could work from.

I saved one of the silent movies till last, as I wanted to progress through the programme from the workshops and build up my own understanding of how type and effects can work together within After Effects. There is a clear result in difference from this comparison.

Rooz Ident

-

One of the final Idents out of the collection, again there are a lot of similarities between the other previously created short motions. The idea is to generate a keen sense of fluid motion, alongside the beat of the track. Although, realistically It needs to be synchronised more effectively to allow a professional finish.

Compact Disc

*

BLANK DISC -

60p / 4.7GB / DVD-R

As I need to burn my files onto a compact disc, the next step is to create packaging suitable for the context & also the CD itself. At the moment I want to look at the overall appearance & packaging, in order to analyse specific parts that make up the box and product.

By doing this I can begin to work from here, then effectively deliver / develop an idea.

- IDEAS / VISUALISATIONS

To get a much more in depth understanding on how a piece of CD packaging could be constructed, I have started to create simple examples using an Isometric grid. This will allow me to have perspective in which I can work around.

- ROUGH MOCK UPS

Although the packaging here is extremely basic, and doesn't really apply any printing techniques or appropriations to the content of the motion graphics. There are still key factors supporting otherwise.

The coloured stock can be related directly to the vibrant colours situated on the Munnyworld vinyl toys, also it compares with the simplicity of design that each toy features.

As you receive a free 'Hello My Name Is' crad, I wanted to see how that could be effectively placed onto a CD sleeve. The most obvious solution would be to directly create a stick that conceals the disc until opened.

- PACKAGING TEMPLATES

MUNNY - Ident

- Ident for the original figure of Kidrobot, Munny. There isn't too much detail in which I can alliterate language to this video, as it's relatively similar to the rest. As I am trying to focus on creating a chain of videos that ultimately can be incorporated into one.

Stuff to Do / Consider

At the moment I've tried to step back from after effects and actually look at what I need to do in order to make the whole context relevant to my chosen subject matter, using CD packaging to allow some usage of print for the project.

BUB - Ident

Again I've tried to give a character to the Bub ident, as I feel that it visually represents the audience and context effectively. Particularly, doing this allows me to keep the audience either aware of the programme from a direct showcase of the munnyworld, or leave mystery as to what it actually might be.

Top Ten - MANUAL

Rotation Test

As I want to create six 10 second, motion graphic animations. I've been playing around with how they could transition together as a set piece. The whole context of the project, is based around simplicity and 'do it yourself' character customisation, so I want to try and incorporate that throughout the motion.

- ROTATION

This idea is simple, rotating each composition around the same axis to allow each frame to fit into place. I think this is already quite effective as I don't want to the transition changes to be too fluid. The audio needs altering though, as there is not a fluent cross over from one composition to another, this however can be easily changed.

Trikky - IDENT

Again like the first ident, this one is again showcasing one of the characters from the Munnyworld collection, by doing this I am building up a collection of short motion clips, that can be put together to form a title sequence. Effectively reducing the amount of work that I need to do on After Effects. It seems like the most obvious solution.

Top Ten - COLOUR

Again, this is something that is relatively important to the context of the actual brief. What I have tried to focus on are the pastel colour ways on the packaging, and plain white vinyl toys that come together as a product. It seems relatively convenient to approach the motion this way, as you can clearly relate the title sequence with the Munnyworld collection.

- COLOURS

Top Ten - TYPEFACES

As alongside the imagery in my motion, there needs to be type to represent and inform the audience exactly what it is they're watching. Picking a correct and effective typeface is something I have found hard to relate to this project. Considering that, I have put together a list of potential typefaces, but out of them all the most effective in relation to the context, is 'Ostrich Sans'. Saying that, I just think it flows more efficiently across the screen.

TOP Ten Defined

<

Pretty much forgot to post what my actual top ten is. Realistically from all the research I have done, it seemed appropriate to base the project around existing Kidrobot customisable toys. There are quite a variety of vinyl figures around, but the selection from the Munnyworld collection seem to have the worldwide recognition.

The list of vinyl toys I am going to use -

* Munny
* Raffy
* Rooz
* Foomi
* Bub
* Trikky
* Dunny
* Kracka
* Fat Cap
* Yummy

( Examples & Vectored artwork in older posts  )

AUDIENCE -

There are two primary audiences I am targeting my motion graphics project towards, toy collectors and Illustrators / Artists who are involved with the Graffiti/Street art style. This seems like the obvious intended market and by what I have gathered from my research, the most prominent.

CONTEXT -

The context is simple, I'm basically promoting 10 pieces of vinyl toy from the Kidrobot collection and showcasing how they can be customised to meet specific requirements, or artistic desire. Screen based media, completed with a printed cover to finish off the disc. Examples of relative colour and custom toys. I'm going to incorporate my own Illustration into the piece as I feel that it fit's in with the criteria I am working with.

CHANNEL - E4

Out of all the broadcasted British T.V channels, E4 seems to have the humorous attitude towards showcasing comedies and quirky programmes. Their idents alone, stand out from most of the channels as they regularly invite designers/students to create 'estings' which are shot idents promoting the channels identity.

Dunny - Ident

This is more minimalist in design, as I didn't want to over complicate the motion itself. By doing this there is a clear sense of direction towards the audience, focussing primarily on the text and image involved. For an outcome I think it's quite effective in communicating the context. Most of the effects are presets in the Adobe programme, some I think are quite effective in fitting with the beat.

Sound Test - Ident

I'm not going to lie, there isn't any relative timing with the motion and the track. I've just ripped it on quickly so I can get an understanding of how sound can effect my sequence. After making this test ident, I've realised there needs to be some improvement on how everything flows throughout the screen, it all looks a bit to unnatural. This is something that I can change though.

Munnyworld - Existing Toy Design

I've put together examples of existing toy design from the book 'Dot Dot Dash'. This book showcases works of art collected from numerous artists and collectors. To get a better feel of the colours I could be using in my project, I'm going to use similar ones to those that have been used in here to create a sense of relation.
